October 18, 2022 Greetings from the Office of Research
|
|
I hope your semester is in full swing and going well. So far, the Office of Research has hosted several events this semester to support your research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA): RSCA Cafés on both social justice and sustainability, a successful hybrid RSCA in Five: Faculty Short Talks on Big Data and Data Science, as well as workshops on internal funding initiatives, early career grants, finding funding, and more. Read below to see what is in store for RSCA support for the rest of the semester and much of the academic year.
I also want to highlight that now is a great time for SJSU faculty to apply for grants, as agencies have new commitments to funding minority-serving institutions and traditionally underrepresented scholars. To underscore this new reality, I want to highlight two events initiated by direct federal outreach to SJSU. First, Dr. Susan S. Margulies, who leads the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Engineering, requested a short-notice visit in September to better understand how NSF could impact SJSU’s research culture, and was thoroughly impressed by our faculty and students. She was surprised to learn that the CSU system annually educates one out of every sixteen undergraduate engineering students in the U.S. Dr. Margulies clearly took particular note of this statistic and took genuine interest in the research presented to her.
Second, Dr. Enrique Pumar, program director for the NSF SBE Build and Broaden Program, gave a virtual session to demystify the NSF for social scientists and encourage proposals from SJSU and the CSU system. The new request for Build and Broaden proposals has just been released. Dr. Pumar has also invited all interested SJSU faculty to a two day workshop, Diversifying Diversity: New Research Opportunities in the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences November 1-2, 2022. I hope many of you can attend.
As we continue to grow our RSCA enterprise and tell our story more broadly, engagement requests by agencies and external collaborators will become more common. The Office of Research will fully support these relationship building activities as a way to promote your success. Indeed, we are happy to partner with you to engage with agencies proactively. In short, I want you to know that the Office of Research is your partner and advocate; let us help you tell your RSCA story and please engage with the programming we provide.
All my best,
Richard Mocarski
Associate Vice President for Research

RSCA Administration Training: A (Virtual) Four-Part Workshop Series for Principal Investigators — February 2023
Managing the administration of your personal RSCA at SJSU can be complex and somewhat challenging. Whether you have already received a grant or you are planning a proposal, there are many things to know to be able to design, plan, and manage your personal RSCA. Beginning
February 2023, Research Development (RD), Research Compliance (RC), and the SJSU Research Foundation | Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) will offer a four-part workshop series that will equip you with the knowledge you will need to navigate the process and successfully manage your research and creative activities. The series will include the following: (1) planning your lab or RSCA space as well as mentoring and hiring students, (2) contract negotiation, (3) compliance and ethical issues, and (4) managing your grant post award in compliance with all applicable regulations. Attend all four virtual workshops to receive a certificate of completion and $500 added to your SJSURF RSCA account.

Wondering if a given request for proposals (RFP) aligns with your RSCA? Ask yourself the following four questions:
- Does the RSCA you want to do truly fit the sponsor's RFP?
- Are you prepared with adequate preliminary works to be credible and competitive?
- Do you have enough time to prepare a polished proposal?
- Does it fit into your long-term RSCA strategic objectives?
If you answered no to one or more of these questions you may want to find another RFP or wait for the next round. If you are unsure, contact
Research Development!

The New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy is Coming — Are you Ready?
In October of 2020, NIH issued a new
Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy. The requirements for the submission of Data Management and Sharing (DMS) plans outlined in this policy will apply to any grants submitted on or after January 25, 2023, with the expectation that the sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded research will be maximized.
In its simplest form, a DMS plan should describe how the investigators intend to manage and share data; compliance with the plan is more important than complexity. The plan must also be updated to reflect revisions to the research timeline, changes in the focus of the research, or the creation of new, more appropriate repositories. Further, NIH expects that the plan will be consistent with
FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles.
It is important to note that NIH has created special considerations and guidelines for
Human Research Participant Data and
Data from American Indian/Alaska Native Participants. If you will be writing a DMS Plan that includes either of these data types, please reach out to the Research Compliance Unit for guidance.
To assist investigators, the NIH has provided the following:
