FAQs
- What does the program consist of, aside from a summer math class?
-
The main component of the program is a supported math class. This means that tutoring, mentoring, and extra help workshops are already part of the class experience. We want to set you off to a successful start at SJSU, so Early Start classes generally provide more academic support than the equivalent classes in the fall and spring.
Additionally, students will complete a series of online asynchronous modules that provide writing support, student success skills (time management and self-study), and an exploration of campus resources (student organizations, the fitness center, and the health and wellness center).

- What if my Early Start class conflicts with my orientation session?
-
In Summer 2024 entering first-year students participating in Early Start are encouraged to attend Sparta Camp Orientation Session 4 (July 19-20). Class will not meet on these days.
If you cannot attend Sparta Camp 4, don't worry. Early Start instructors will be told which Sparta Camp sessions their students are attending. Your absence will be excused and the lessons will be recorded for later viewing.
-
- If I do not live in the San Jose area but want to attend Early Start at SJSU, can
I obtain university housing over the summer?
-
All Early Start classes except ESM 26 will be offered online in Summer 2024.
-
- What forms of financial aid are available to Early Start students?
-
Students with Student Aid Index of $6,000 or less will receive a full fee waiver for their Early Start classes. (This is the threshold for Pell and CA Dream Act aid.)
All other students will be charged $191 per unit, which is a 32% discount from regular summer rates. For example, ESM 18A and its support workshop, ESM 1018AS, are four units total. In the regular summer term, the cost of these four units would be $1,120. However, through Early Start, the cost is $764. Contact earlystart@sjsu.edu for more information.
