Academic Regalia (Cap & Gown)

Graduates are required to wear the correct degree academic regalia to attend their commencement ceremony. Academic regalia is available to purchase in the Spartan Bookstore or the Herff Jones website.

Undergraduate candidates

- Black Bachelor's graduation gown

- Black graduation cap (mortarboard)

- Tassel, color-specific for their college.

Credential candidates

Credential candidates are to request academic regalia related to their highest degree level. 

If you have not obtained a Master's degree you should request a Undergraduate's academic regalia.

If you have a Master's degree you should request Master's academic regalia.

Master's candidates

- Black Master's graduation gown (sleeves differ from a Bachelor gown)

- Black graduation cap (mortarboard)

- Black tassel

- Academic Hood, color-specific for their degree.

Doctoral candidates

Doctoral regalia must be ordered online.

Doctoral academic regalia is specific to their doctorate degree.

Regalia purchasing options

In-person @SJSU Spartan Bookstore

Recommended for Undergraduates, Masters, and Credential graduates. This is the fastest & least expensive method.

Sales begin from the start of Grad Fest through Commencement.

Online (required for Doctoral Graduates)

To order regalia online, please visit the Herff Jones website. The site will close 30 days prior to the first day of commencement in order to allow all orders to be delivered in time. Shipping charges will be added to online orders.

Latin Honors Medallions

Latin Honors medallions are presented to eligible undergraduate students who are currently eligible for a Latin Honor. Eligible students will be notified later in the semester by email to their "Preferred Email Address" with instructions for how to pick-up their medallion.

To qualify for Latin Honors, both your Cumulative SJSU GPA and your All College GPA must meet the minimum requirements.

    • Summa Cum Laude, GPA range of 3.85-4.0
    • Magna Cum Laude, GPA range of 3.7-3.84
    • Cum Laude, GPA range of 3.5-3.69
