Academic Disqualification

If an international student in F-1 visa status is academically disqualified from San Jose State University (SJSU), this could adversely impact their F-1 status and  their ability to continue to maintain their immigration status and stay in the U.S. A student is considered to be academically disqualified if they are on academic notice (formerly know as probation) for two consecutive semesters.

Per University rules, a student is put on academic notice (formerly known as probation) when the following occurs:

If an international student F-1 student is academically disqualified from SJSU, they would have the following options if they have been maintaining their F-1 status prior to be academically disqualified.:

  1. Transfer SEVIS record to another U.S. institution before the start of the next semester.
  2. One option is to enroll at semester at SJSU (SAS) through the SJSU International Gateways Program.
  3. Another option is to transfer to a community college.
  4. If a student does not request a transfer out before the start of the next semester, their SEVIS record will be terminated. The student will no longer be able to legally remain in the U. S. and will need to depart immediately.

We recommend you review the following documents regarding Academic Disqualification, which includes returning to SJSU after a student has been disqualified:
